Beneath the earth, a great underground river flows through absolute darkness. It does not pause, does not doubt, does not turn back. It simply flows. And because it flows with unwavering constancy, it eventually reaches the light.
The Abysmal doubled is one of the most challenging hexagrams in the I Ching — danger upon danger, with no easy escape. When this card appears, you are in the midst of a difficult passage. The dangers are real, the darkness is genuine, and there may be no immediate way out.
But the card's deepest teaching is this: water succeeds not by fighting the abyss but by filling it. Each hollow is filled completely and honestly before the water flows on. There are no shortcuts through the Abysmal — only steady, sincere passage.
"If you are sincere, you have success in your heart" — this is not optimistic platitude but survival instruction. In genuine danger, the only reliable compass is inner truth. When external landmarks disappear in darkness, sincerity becomes your guide.
The superior person "walks in lasting virtue" even through the deepest valley. This is not idealism; it is strategy. Virtue and consistency are what carry you through when everything else fails. The underground river does not need to see the sun to flow toward it.
Trust the current. Be sincere. Flow through.
