Hexagram 1 · The Creative (☰): Heaven in Ceaseless Motion — The Dragon's Path Through the World

Hexagram 1 — The Creative (☰☰) is the very first of the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching. Formed by doubling the trigram The Creative (☰), all six lines are yang — making it the only hexagram of pure yang among the sixty-four. The character 乾 (qián) originally means 'rising upward,' extending to signify the vastness and vigor of heaven — the ceaseless motion of the celestial way.

Judgment: Sublime Success. Perseverance Furthers.

The four words of the Judgment — Yuan, Heng, Li, Zhen (元亨利貞) — form the overarching principle of Hexagram 1, and indeed the most essential four virtues of the entire I Ching. The Wenyan Commentary elaborates: 'Yuan is the origin of all goodness; Heng is the convergence of all beauty; Li is the harmony of all righteousness; Zhen is the backbone of all endeavor.'

• Yuan (Sublimity): The origin of all things, the root of creation — representing early spring, new life, and the beginning of every good thing. The noble person embodies benevolence and thus may lead others.
• Heng (Success): Free and unimpeded flow, like spring flowers in full bloom — representing career prosperity and harmonious relationships.
• Li (Furtherance): Appropriate benefit aligned with principle, contributing to the greater good without violating the way of heaven — representing harvest and achievement.
• Zhen (Perseverance): Steadfast correctness, holding firm to the right path — the foundation upon which all lasting accomplishment is built.

Together, the four virtues mean: at the right moment (Yuan), in a spirit of openness (Heng), take beneficial action (Li), and always remain on the correct path (Zhen) — this is the complete guidance Hexagram 1 offers for life.

Tuan Commentary: Great Indeed Is the Sublimity of the Creative

The Tuan Commentary states: 'Great indeed is the sublimity of the Creative, to which all beings owe their beginning and which permeates all heaven. The clouds pass and the rain does its work, and all individual beings flow into their forms. Because the sage comprehends the nature of the end and the beginning, the six stages complete themselves in their own time. At the proper time he mounts the six dragons and thus rides across the sky. The way of the Creative works through change and transformation, so that each thing receives its true nature and destiny, and they are kept in accord with the Great Harmony. Thus does it further through perseverance. The sage towers above the multitude of beings, and all lands are united in peace.'

This passage reveals the cosmology of the hexagram: heaven is the source from which all things spring. Riding the six dragons (the six lines) across heaven and earth, each being finds its place and fulfills its destiny, and the world attains universal harmony. 'At the proper time he mounts the six dragons and rides across the sky' — this is the arc of the six lines: the dragon in its six phases from concealment to flight, mapping the complete journey of a life from dormancy to full ascent.

This is one of the most celebrated maxims of Chinese civilization. The motion of heaven is powerful and unceasing — sun, moon, and stars never pause. Emulating this celestial way, the noble person commits to tireless self-strengthening. 'Strength' (健) is the core virtue of the Creative — not brute force, but sustained, resilient, inexhaustible inner drive. This phrase has been inscribed in countless schools, academies, and family precepts, inspiring generations of men and women of purpose to strive ever onward.
