Six in the Fourth enters the upper trigram Gen, the first line of the restraining force. A yin line that uses gentle strength to contain the yang energy of First Nine below. "The headboard of a young bull. Supreme good fortune" — fitting a young bull with a wooden yoke across its horns while it is still small brings supreme good fortune.
This is the most exquisite management wisdom of the hexagram: when creative energy is just emerging, Six in the Fourth applies gentle restraint to guide it effortlessly onto the right track. Waiting until the bull is fully grown makes control far more difficult.
The Xiao Xiang Commentary says: "There is cause for joy." Addressing problems while they are small is truly wise, hence supreme good fortune. The key is acting early — early detection, early intervention, early guidance.
Modern Insight: Whether nurturing talent, managing teams, or practicing self-discipline, the earlier rules and habits are established, the lower the cost and the greater the effectiveness. Guide the sapling while it is young so it may grow into a towering tree.
